Livin A Dream

Not sure if it was the depression, hard living, cancer, or financial downfall that sparked the will to live. The combination of those certainly does not seem to be the recipe for life however that is exactly what happened the lives of two people intertwined.

He was living high on the hog, as they say in the south. Riding the wave of exhilaration with the rocky cliff of disaster in clear view. The thrill of victory was so much stronger than the fear of defeat that he always lived at the epicenter of an earthquake not yet felt. Then things slowly began to unravel, or should I say peel down to reveal the fruit. It was the pain in his left leg, that agonizing uncomfortable feeling that simply would not go away. After a few weeks he finally decided to go to the doctor and get this behind him. Much to his surprise the diagnosis was advanced stage bone cancer. The shock, jolt, slap, or spit in the face was more than he was prepared to deal with it. Impossible, he thought. I will find another doctor, of which he did, and the result was the same.

She was running a successful business that completely dominated every facet of her life. Even though it was spoken that family was important it was not evident in her actions. She was burning the candle at both ends. As much for the ego as it was for the money so as to look her best at the social gatherings she found impossible to turn down. Call it an oversight, mismanagement, deceptive, or downright criminal we will never know. What we do know is about the day the IRS walked in and closed her down due to illegal tax reporting. Not only did they close the business they froze her personal bank accounts. At the snap of a finger her high rolling, fancy living, came to a screeching halt. What ensued could not have been predicted. Sure she faced the embarrassment, anger, and severe depression in the midst of her financial collapse. All her socialite snobbish friends (just like her) disappeared so fast her head was spinning. Even family and friend created a distance due to the way she had treated them over the years. She was the smart financial whiz while they were the uneducated conservative nothings that would never amount to anything.

The encounter was by chance or miracle, who really knows. He had left his treatment and headed to the local pharmacy to fill a prescription for pain medication. Resolved that his life was over all he had left to fill his days until the end were memories of regret as well as the disillusion of what could have been. Life as he knew it was over and he had little desire to extend it.

She pulled into the parking lot at the same store to get her prescription of anxiety medication filled. All she wanted to do was get her medication and get back home so she could hide from herself and the world. To embarrassed to face anyone she knew the best thing to do was to hide out until this life was over, which she hoped would be sooner than later.

As he walked out the door a dizzy feeling came over him. He almost made it to his car when he lost his balanced and stumbled to the ground. Seeing this she ran over to help the gentleman. He assured her he was ok but she recognized that he was too unstable to drive. With her urging he leaned against the car to try and regain his composure. As he thanked her an emotion of shame came over him and the tears from nowhere trickled down his face. Feeling awkward she facilitated a conversation that at first she wished would simply end. As the seconds turned to minutes a weird awe filled heart tug came over her. The face of this man had a strange familiarity yet for the life of her she could not figure out why. Was it the mannerisms, the eyes, or maybe something he said. It all seemed so disconnected yet so united all at the same time.

With no place to go and the weather all but perfect the conversation went from minutes to nearly three hours. Then it happened. Where the question came from only God knows. He ask her who her parents were in the hopes he might find a family connection to further the discussions. He too had felt a strange connection to this total stranger. As she allowed the emotions to well up while searching for an answer she finally resorted to the truth, something she was not normally comfortable with. She told him all she knew which was not much because her biological parents were killed in a car accident when she was three. She lived with her grandmother until she could not take care of her at which point she ended up in foster care.

The man knew immediately that the life long puzzle was complete, He was now in the presence of his one and only sister that  he was separated from 45 years earlier. His mother was pregnant when the wreck happened. Even though he was saved he was also put up for adoption. His adoptive parents were hippies at heart yet honest with him too. He knew of his sister yet beings that it was a closed adoption he had little means to pursue her whereabouts. As his life was drawing to and end he had resolved to the fact he would never meet her.

God has a unique way of creating circumstances that spark life back into us. To bring this story to a conclusion I will fast forward a three years. His cancer is in remission, which he credits with his new found desire to live. Her life, with her brothers help, took an amazing turn for the better. She found the humility to accept where she was in an effort to move forward. She now travels to schools and other civic functions and speaks to young people about pursuing their dreams as well as keeping integrity in their  life. She also volunteers her time to mentor people that have lost their way in life as she did.

Her and her brother have an amazing relationship. The families have had so much fun getting to know each other. Her sense for family and love for life has taken on a whole new meaning. He (the brother) is still struggling from the surgeries and chemo yet he is fighting to stay healthy. He has started a community health movement that focuses on physical, emotional, and spiritual well being. He finds it almost amusing where his life has taken him. Everything he did in the past brought him to exactly where he is now. They both say that life is more fulfilling now than ever. They point to God and the divine intervention that sparked their will to live. They were literally at deaths doors yet their hope receptors were extended. I urge you to always be open to the possibility that life can change quick and change for the better. keep your hope alive and who knows what door will open for you next. Life truly is great when you are LIVIN A DREAM.

peace to you
Dale
