I am alive

Over the last few weeks several of us on social media have been asking the question, "who are you". What we did not want to hear was your name. The responses were incredible maybe even surprising at the honesty. I felt pride from the people that felt that they knew exactly who they were and I felt the pain from those that were astonished anyone could even ask the question. One lady wrote a lengthy heart felt answer and concluded with "I can't believe I am answering this"

Who we think we are is at the core of our very being. We are children of God, yes, we are also individuals seeking identity. Where do we go in search for self and how do we know that the direction we take is the right one? That is the realm of the unknown and it is where faith and courage will have to provide the strength to explore new and exciting facets of life.

Consider your search for self similar to your investment portfolio, never put your eggs in one basket. When you search for self make sure to utilize a vast array of resources. Many well intentioned people will have you stick close to religion and try to convince you that prayer alone reveals our inner self. Or worse they will tell you that God has a plan for you and he reveals it in his time. That is simply not true. God gave us a mind and heart for a reason.  If you feel totally at peace with your religion or faith based learning facility then by all means utilize that as a source of search. However be careful not to make it your judge, jury, and executioner.

Another source that I think is one of the most important is where your thoughts, hopes, and dreams reside. If you have lost hope in life, or the dreams have faded to the point of being non-existent then you will have to use total memory recall to think about the dreams from days gone by.  They are there and yes they can still be lived. Give your dreams a sporting chance they may be your best source of energy.

Next look at your passions, what motivates you to action, what makes your heart flutter. Maybe it is writing, volunteering, sky diving, visiting family and friends, joining a new church, etc. What drives your mind when you are lying in bed awake at night with those wonderful "what if" thoughts.

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Are you over weight, under weight, out of shape, gay living a straight life, straight living a gay life, or whatever. You get the point. By now your head is either spinning out of control or things are starting to make sense.

Who are you? It is time to find out. Put everything on the table with no sacred cows. Look at all facets of your life even those areas you deemed untouchable. Everything has room for reform or improvement. Learn the art of letting go and saying now. Empower yourself to find the real person that is yearning to come out. Don't give up and don't convince yourself that it is all hopeless. You are where you are and you have what you have and believe it or not it is enough to make magic happen.

Do not live in fear of being accepted because that is what got you lost to start with. No longer live as though you are some else because that robs your true self of the energy to rise up. If something is holding you back figure out how to change it. If past transgressions are haunting you try hard to find the courage to accept that which you cannot change. As you all know the past is gone yet tomorrow has not arrived. Regardless of who we were it is not who we are going to be.

I am so excited about the possibilities of tomorrow. As one of my cancer fighting friends told me, "we are alive to live so live it to the hilt because the end comes sooner than you think".

Keep searching for the elusive self and enjoy the journey as you go. Remember no sacred cows, turn over every stone, look in the places you once refused to look and one day soon your efforts will produce a magnificent portrait of self you once thought would never exist again. Come on I have work to do, I am searching for myself too.

peace to you
Dale
