The Color of the dress

I loved all the commotion this week about "the color of the dress" on social media. Granted depending on the view I was not sure what the heck the color was either. Then I got a message from a trusted friend using the dress as an analogy for other facets of life. I want to go ahead and give a shout out to Megan Johnston for influencing this blog.

As much debate as ensued about something as simple as a dress color, you must admit that it made you rethink what you thought you saw. It brought to mind for me how often in life we form thoughts an opinions in our minds never giving thought that it may not be true. That became crystal clear this week as that picture went viral on social media. Years ago i remember telling someone that "what a person says is not always what they other person hears". Which reinforces the concept of what you think you see isn't always what something really is.

Our minds are shaped by environmental influence. Meaning what we see, touch, hear, and do make up who we are. If we allow our lives to be filled to the brim with cynicism, hate, and bitterness, most likely that is what other people will see in us. What we absorb is also what we become, good or bad. Our hearts have a touch of warmth but if our external conditioning is less than desirable most likely what others think about us will be too. What is the true color of our personality? That depends on what is going on in our lives at that exact moment. Fear of loss changes our thinking as does being over confident to the point we take things for granted. That become evident in the dress debate. Stop for a minute and think about the things you take for granted in your life.

Now that I have you totally confused about where this is going, let me begin to hone it in. You see here are some facts about life and humanity. The way we see the world is NOT the way the world really is, it is the way we really are. Two people can view the exact same thing and see it completely different, case and point The Dress. Our views of life are formed through our own polarized lenses. In order to change our view we must clean our vision and open our mind to reshaping our thoughts. This can let clear away the clouds and uncertainty and bring in clarity and sunshine. Which for me i something I always need.

Consider the complexity of religion, racism, or the political prism that is trying to be formed as to how we view same sex relationships. I think if we were left alone and allowed our inherent love that God placed in us to form our conscience and develop our hearts that much of the great divide we see in the world would go away. Our views are being so distorted by bitterness and hate that the lines of love have become blurred. I believe that most humans have a deep desire to love their lives and too dream and hope of a better tomorrow. We tend to get lost because what we think we see forms our believe when in reality what we see is wrong.

My point to this writing is to encourage you to open your mind to the possibility that the world holds more amazing treasures if we would simply let go of some of our life long beliefs. Remember the way we see others is not always the way they really are. There are times that people come across rude, they pull out in traffic, they ignore us, but what we do not know is the internal battles they are fighting. Please never hate what you do not understand or know to be true and never judge someone else because you have no idea what they are going through.

Is the color of the dress important? Absolutely not, but the concept of why we see things different is important. I hope that you will allow yourself to believe that everything is not always what it seems. Minds are like parachutes, they only work when they are open. Love is in the air but so is hate, it is up to you to grab the one that can make your life better. By the way sometimes hate and love look the same and come from identical sources, so be careful in your quest for happiness, just know that through a fresh set of lenses opens up a whole new world.

peace and love
Dale
