Alternate Reality

If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere.

Have you ever wondered if you are living in an alternate reality?

Once upon a time many many moons ago we as humans had to work to foster and sustain relationships. We would notice people possibly for days however there was those sudden chance encounters that grew into life long friendships. We met, we shared, we laughed, cried, trusted, and even respected each others differences. We were brought up to believe that friendships were not to be taken for granted. If we had disagreements we talked them out with each other, it was not open for the court of public opinion. Our word was our bond and that bond was deeper than blood. We knew our secrets were safe with our friends and we never had to worry about being embarrassed by sharing intimate details of our lives because a mutual trust existed.

Then one day there was a thing called social media. At first it was a wonderful way to rekindle distant relationships, to share cute sweet funny photos, to catch up on lost time, or even find that long lost relative that everyone seems to have forgotten. Oh, those were the good ole days. Awesome friendships with an enhanced connection that would help us stay close for life. But then something strange happened. Little by little we eased out of the universe we lived in and built a colony in some alternate reality we will call Facebook land. Our circles grew and our attitudes grew bigger. We discovered we had a voice and an opinion for everything. WOW this was so cool, we can say and do anything right from the comfort and safety of our mobile device. Darn, does it get much better?

As Facebook land grew in population, various communities begin to grow. Earth was slowly but surely fading into a memory of days gone by. I mean, think about it, the old days on earth were rather boring. Our friend circles were small, even though they were loyal and faithful. Our world views were always discussed in a respectful tone due to the simple fact that those discussions were face to face and always ended with a hug or hand shake. When someone was hurting physically or emotionally we were there to offer comfort, live and in color. But we all decided that earth could no longer serve us so we left for a more fun and exciting place. Just the mere thought of being able to speak without touching, to shout without facing anyone had a certain appeal.

Back in Facebook land the place of alternate realities our friend circles include people we have absolutely no idea who they are or how we got together. We love to get involved in social discussions that escalate into such bitter diatribes that we, wait for it, we UNFRIEND people, oh my WOW, that is how we live in alternate realities. Yes our friendships have no substance or core values, they are as unsafe as the UNFRIEND button. The cool thing about living in Facebook land is news headlines. No one cares about the truth anymore, well honestly in Facebook land there is no truth. Every few minutes stories evolve and as that evolution comes into play we are screaming out our negative thoughts and views. If we allow our alternate reality attitude to peak high enough we can reduce ourselves to that wonderful amazing thing the UNFRIEND button. I mean, come on, in Facebook land if you do not share the same world views as me, you obviously are an idiot or you simply suck. Best thing for me to do is CALL YOU OUT to my other alternate reality friends, post a negative opinion based on headlines I did not research or resort to the old faithful standby the UNFRIEND.

You have to admit living in an alternate reality does have benefits. You can troll other people's pages,  you can create opinions about things you know absolutely nothing about, heck you can suddenly dislike someone based on someone else's post. If you are going through a tough time in life and you need someone to validate your victim mentality by all means share something in Facebook land and the misery loves company crowd will come running. They love to jump on the pity party bandwagon.

While back on earth, the few people that are left, work feverishly to hold on to the values of the past. It doesn't take long to realize that it is like being in quicksand with no means of escape. As an inhabitant on earth, however, you learn the wonderful age old art of survival. So you and I will take our knowledge of earthly values and make the journey over to Facebook land and combine the forces to bring enchantment and joy to our alternate reality experience.

Obviously all is not bad in Facebook land. This is a silly journey through human evolution in a short span of time. Personally I love social media. I enjoy sharing things that can lift people up and hopefully never bring them down. It is my goal to never share my views in a disrespectful ways. Regardless of our political views, sins we have committed, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, gender, or race, we should all be able to share a common space on earth or Facebook land. This is where we live, share, and grow. It is who we are. Let's take our freedoms seriously. Never use the power of the social media world in such a way that bullies, belittles, harms, puts down, excludes, embarrasses, or shames another. Remember your halo doesn't shine any brighter than anyone else's. Together through the awesome power of social media we can change this world in ways that is beyond our imagination. We are just now beginning to live our best days. Yes, the world as we knew it, is going to be vastly different. We have to combine our alternate reality with our earthly reality and allow the forces of creative thinking to truly make the world a better place. The great thing is this, it is up to us to make it all happen. We can destroy and divide or we can build bridges of hope. The possibilities are endless in this new age of social media.
