The Man in the Glass
In work,
like life, we face obstacles each day that lift us up or tear us down. The
challenge is how to rise above those moments that attempt to bring us down.
It is easy
for all of us to become what we are around. Which means if we perceive
ourselves being in an atmosphere that is non motivating the normal reaction is
to conform and become non motivating ourselves. The contrast of that is also
true, if we find ourselves in highly productive, team oriented, and customer
service directed, we will adapt and become contributors to that as well.
So, what
happens when you find yourself in the first situation? Do you adapt or do you
overcome? Leadership comes from people in all walks of life. You do not have to
be the actual leader of an organization to display leadership skills. You have
heard the old cliché “be the change you desire to see”. There is merit in that
old saying. When life pulls us down we can either go down with the ship or be
the life preserver and give hope to others so they will have the courage to not
only survive but thrive.
It really is
up to you and I to make the difference in our professional and personal lives.
I often tell people that no man is a failure until he starts blaming others. In
closing I would like to share a wonderful poem called “The Man in the Glass”.
Choose to be great and the world will become great around you.
When you get what you want in your struggle for self And the world makes you king for a day Just go to the mirror and look at yourself And see what that man has to say. For it isn’t your father, or mother, or wife Whose judgment upon you must pass The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life Is the one staring back from the glass. He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest For he’s with you, clear to the end And you’ve passed your most difficult, dangerous test If the man in the glass is your friend. You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years And get pats on the back as you pass But your final reward will be heartache and tears If you’ve cheated the man in the glass. |
