Never Give up

In July of 1952, Florence May Chadwick attempted to swim 26 miles from Catalina Island to the California coastline. It would be an amazing feat for any swimmer, given the distance and the chilly temperature of the water in the Pacific Ocean. She set out, flanked by several small boats that were on the lookout for sharks. The boats could help her if she abandoned her course. Several hours into the swim, a heavy fog set in. The fog created doubt in her mind because she could no longer see the lights of the coastline. Florence abandoned her quest because the finish line was no longer in sight. Yet when the fog lifted, she realized she was less than a mile from the coast.

Two months later, Florence attempted the same feat. T he fog set in and clouded her view once again. However, she had a mental image of the coastline and was able to complete this incredible endeavor.

It is safe to say that Florence would have completed her first attempt if she had the visual image of her goal emblazoned in her mind. This story serves as an analogy of life. I am confident that in most of our endeavors we are truly close to victory, yet we quit because we cannot see the finish line.

If we are to be the greatest temple of Christ on earth, it is imperative that we push through the obstacles. One will probably find that most obstacles are self-inflicted by the human mind, due to the negative world we are exposed to. Florence Chadwick may have lost that first attempt; however, she regrouped. She formed a mental picture of victory and set out the second time with certainty that the prize of her training awaited her.

What are you training for? Is it to convince everyone that we should hunker down and accept defeat? Are you training to make the lives of everyone around miserable because life has dealt you a bad hand? Are you training to live in the shadows of others due to a past? Do you feel like you do not deserve victory? I pray that you are training to become the best you can possibly be. Train to make the lives of those around you better as you continue to make yourself stronger and wiser by living the word of Gospel.

Just because your last attempt at something did not work, try again. This time, it is up to you to picture the finish line. Do not give up. We are all so close to the Cross, yet so far from Christ. Remember that you are too close to victory to allow Satan to draw you back into defeat. Swim one more mile, open one more door, smile at one more person, pray bigger prayers, stand up and tell yourself that you are God’s greatest miracle. Be the best version of yourself that you can be. You can’t finish a race you don’t start and you can’t win a game that you don’t play. As you approach your goal, know that as you continue to push forward, you made it worth the effort. You can do it.

Here are a couple of closing quotes to meditate on as you go about your week
“When there is hope, there can be faith. When there is faith, miracles can happen and dreams can come true.”
“You cannot run away from weakness; you must fight it out or perish. If that be so, why not now and where you stand?” –Robert Louis Stevenson

May the peace and love of Christ be with you always
